Apart from his impressive collection of Hawaiian shirts and trademark moustache, a navy Detroit Tigers baseball cap was a Magnum P.I. favourite, regularly appearing on the show. “I was born in Detroit and was a Tigers fan my entire life,” Selleck recently told the Detroit Free Press. “I felt Magnum was a ball cap kind of guy.“ It soon became one of the best-selling caps in Major League Baseball.

The design of the ‘Magnum’ Detroit Tigers ball cap, navy with the old English style letter D stitched in white thread, remains true to the 80’s TV series (and dates back to the 60s). As a baseball cap it is of course instantly recognisable to many, but the names? Here’s what they mean:
The ‘Clean Up’ cap is the softer, relaxed cap with a worn-in look. It is named after the cleanup hitter in baseball, the fourth hitter in the batting order and traditionally the most powerful hitter – his job is to ‘clean up the bases’, i.e. drive in the base runners.
The more structured ‘MVP’ cap is named for the ‘Most Valuable Player’, an annual Major League Baseball (MLB) award given to one outstanding player in the American League and one in the National League.
Baseball cap care
The best approach to cleaning a baseball cap (especially a structured one) is by hand. It could easily be bent out of shape in a washing machine.
Fill a clean sink with cool/warm water, adding a tablespoon of non-bleach laundry detergent or OxiClean. Spot-clean the hat first, as needed. Let the hat soak for up to a couple hours.
Rinse the cap thoroughly with more cool/warm water and pat down with a towel to get rid of excess moisture. Avoid the tumble drier (due to the shape again). Allow it to air dry with a balled up towel inside to keep the shape.
If you do feel the need to toss it into a washing machine, we suggest protecting it by putting it into a pillowcase or reusable mesh bag, use a non-bleach laundry detergent on a cold-water, gentle cycle and limit the amount of other laundry that goes in with it.
